Student Profile: Carter Haines
“I’ve always had an interest in understanding the world around me, so studying physics came naturally. But when I got to UT Dallas, I used some of my free hours to explore a few electives, and I found neuroscience to offer both the most interesting and the most challenging classes, so I recently added it as a second major.
I started working in the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute as a NanoExplorer during the summer after 10th grade, and I’ve been coming back ever since. In fact, I was attracted to UT Dallas for the opportunity to work with Dr. Ray Baughman, who leads the institute. Working there as undergraduate student has been both enjoyable and very rewarding. Through the institute, I feel I’ve learned at least as much and met as many interesting people as I have from my classes.
When you’re first starting out, try a lot of different classes early on while you still have time to change your mind, unless you’re totally sure about your major.
At UT Dallas, I’ve found that with a little effort, I can get to know a lot of interesting people. I’m still friends with the people I roomed with when I lived on campus for two years, and I’ve met many new friends both within and outside of the physics department.”
Carter Haines is a physics and neuroscience double major. His hobbies include recreational bicycling and metalwork.
