Undergraduates
Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Physics is an active, engaged community that stimulates its students’ curiosity about the fundamental workings of the universe. We encourage students to think deeply through questions about how the universe works, to find and connect abstract relationships to new situations and to be knowledgeable scientists, teachers, and lifelong learners.

Undergraduate Advising
It is recommended that all students meet with their NS&M academic advisor at least once per semester to discuss degree requirements, course selection, time management, study skills, difficulties with coursework, career opportunities, and personal concerns.
Dr. Lindsay King is the faculty advisor for physics majors. She would like to meet with all first-semester students, particularly freshmen, to welcome you and discuss any questions you may have about the physics department, the program of studies, or anything else that may concern you. Upperclassmen are encouraged to see Dr. King one or two more times while working toward their bachelor’s degree.
UTeach Option
The UTeach Option may be added to the BA/BS degree in physics to complete both an undergraduate degree and all course work for middle or high school teacher certification, in four years. While most graduates go on to classroom teaching, UTeach alums also are prepared to enter graduate school and to work in discipline-related industry.
BS/MS Fast Track
For students interested in pursuing graduate studies in physics, the department offers an accelerated BS / MS Fast Track that involves taking graduate courses in lieu of several advanced undergraduate courses. See NSM advising or contact Undergraduate Program Head, Dr. Michael Kesden.
Research Opportunities
Our faculty encourages undergraduates in particular to get involved in research on campus. The UT Dallas Office of Research and Innovation provides Undergraduate Research Scholar Awards, a competitive program that funds student research under the guidance of faculty mentors. Visit Summer Research Programs and the Physics Research Experiences for Undergraduates pages for other opportunities.
